  • Casa del Fattore -- Florence Hills/Tuscany

    print this page

    Accommodates 8+1 -- 4+ bedrooms -- 3 baths

Casa del Fattore is an essentially free-standing house in its own grounds in an unbelievable location in the hills immediately outside Florence. We say "essentially" because Casa del Fattore forms part of a neat little 17th-century "borgo", i.e., a grouplet of country buildings clustered around what was once a noble villa. Casa del Fattore lies at the outer perimeter of the borgo, attached on one side only, with its own completely independent garden with lovely views over surrounding countryside. The sense of peace and quiet is such that you can hardly believe you're only 4 or 5 miles from the very center of Florence and less than half that distance from the motorway entrance, making Casa del Fattore perfect for those of you wanting to visit both city and surrounding countryside.

First, let us say what Casa del Fattoria is not: It is not a fancy house; people looking for "style" or for "elegance" should look elsewhere. It is not a house for groups of couples looking for elegant suburban-style bedrooms of equal size with en-suite bathrooms. Rather, Casa del Fattore is a very good, comfortable, particularly well-equipped and well-serviced house for families or for 2 or even 3 couples without pretense. Furnishings and fittings are pleasing, eclectic, functional, and tasteful, but not elegant or stylish. The living room is a particularly pleasant room.

Housekeeping and cooking can be arranged (a certain amount of housekeeping is already included), as well as childcare and food shopping. And you'll find telephone, FAX, satellite TV, computer, high-speed internet connection, and stereo/CD.

You enter Casa del Fattore from the little square of the borgo, where there's plenty of parking. The door from the square leads into a sort of arched breezeway through which you immediately see the green lawned expanse of the garden beyond. It's a very welcoming feeling. To the right, you'll find a spacious living/dining room with two sofas and a working fireplace. Back across the breezeway, a pass-through dining area leads into the old-fashioned eat-in kitchen with double fridge, double oven, and dishwasher. A guest half-bath is also on this level, with washing machine.

Upstairs, three bedrooms give off the landing: a master bedroom with indivisible matrimonial bed and en-suite bathroom with shower/tub combo; plus two other bedrooms which can be set up as either twin or matrimonial. These two bedrooms share a brand-new hall bathroom with shower over tub.

Back downstairs, and outside, a pleasant covered loggia overlooking the garden runs the length of the living room and contains a big table for outdoor dining. This is where we'd imagine eating most of our meals. The garden itself contains three principal elements: extensive lawns; a private swimming pool about 5 x 11 meters; and a charming fully independent cottage with twin/double bedroom; separate single bedroom with its own entrance; bathroom with shower only; and kitchenette.

We very much liked Casa del Fattore, and we feel strongly that you will, too.
