The young American owners of
Colonnette purchased the property in 2001 and restored it
in record time. It is a classic Tuscan/Umbrian farmhouse in
a gorgeous position along the old road between Orvieto to
Todi, much closer to the former, about 10-12 minutes’
scenic drive to the Orvieto autostrada exit. A whole host
of daytrips is possible: Orvieto and Todi themselves, of course,
but also places like Viterbo, Perugia, Spoleto, Assisi, Montefalco,
Bevagna, and Spello. The Orvieto train station is supplied
with a huge free parking lot, and you can take trips to both
Rome and Florence from there without the stress of highway
driving. A small food shop is located in the hamlet of Colonnette
nearby, while the area around the Orvieto autostrada exit
offers all possible services — post office, banks, restaurants,
big COOP supermarket — without the necessity of ascending
into Orvieto itself. (By the way, parking at the train station
allows you to take the little funicular up into medieval Orvieto
where parking is at a premium.)
The Colonnette house develops
over several levels. Upstairs you’ll find a big open-plan
living room furnished with modern, comfortable pieces, dining
room with table for 8-10, and kitchen up to the very best
American standards. Three matrimonial bedrooms each have their
own baths en-suite (two shower only; one shower over tub;
one bedroom divisible into twins). Downstairs, two large bedrooms
(one indivisible matrimonial, one joinable twin) share a bath
with shower only. These latter bedrooms are roomy and comfortable
but less “restored” than those upstairs. The owners
have supplied the house with phone, answering machine/FAX,
internet connection, stereo/CD player, washing machine, dishwasher,
satellite TV, ceiling fans, and window screens.
The whole feel is one of a mixture
of country elegance with furnishings both comfortable and
modern, with a tilt towards the high-tech.
Outdoor spaces are particularly
appealing, full of flowers, and the brand-new swimming pool
is set in an especially spectacular position.
The house comes with a housekeeper
a couple of times a week, and more domestic services including
cooking are available at reasonable hourly rates.
