    Accommodates 10 — 5 Bedrooms — 5 Baths
    Swimming Pool, Tennis Court

After exploring central Tuscany for nearly 40 years, we thought we had traveled on literally every single road: 4-lane, 2-lane, gravel, and dirt. But no. Recently, we found ourselves on a road hitherto untraveled, and not a remote one. Indeed, we were no more than 5 miles from the heart of Siena, complete with a marvelous view out to that incomparably beautiful city's cathedral towers.

We were on our way to visit what turned out to be the old schoolhouse of a noble estate whose villa across the way is still occupied by descendants of the original family. They have beautifully fitted out the old schoolhouse as a holiday home particularly suitable for a number of couples traveling together, as each of its more-or-less-equal bedrooms has its own en-suite or immediately adjacent private bath. But it equally suits a group of single friends, an extended family, or two families.

Again, Siena is just a short distance away. But one does not need to go all the way to Siena for either food shopping or restaurants. The nearest villages are Taverna d'Arbia and Pianella, which have all services.

The Old Schoolhouse is easily described. The setting is delightful, with terraces, patios, gardens, lawns, and swimming pool area all enjoying uninterrupted views over the vineyards and olive groves surrounding the estate. Inside, you'll find a characteristic Tuscan atmosphere highlighted by brickwork floors, vaulted ceilings, and whitewashed walls. On the ground floor are a guest half-bath, a spacious living/dining room, two separate additional sitting rooms, and two kitchens, meaning that in inclement weather, a large group can be inside and be able to watch TV, cook, and play bridge simultaneously but in separate spaces. This is a particularly attractive aspect of The Old Schoolhouse, in our opinion. Upstairs are 5 bedrooms: 2 matrimonials, 1 twin, and 2 rooms that can be prepared as either matrimonials or twins, depending on the group's desires. All five bathrooms are equipped with excellent showers (in two cases shower over tub), and all bedrooms are fitted out with ceiling fans and window screens, which means a comfortable night's sleep even in the height of summer.

Housekeeping is included two mornings per week, and extra hours can be arranged, as can food shopping, initial provisions, cooking, personal laundry and ironing. Gourmet Tuscan meals can be arranged, even in the estate's villa, with sufficient advance notice. Phone, FAX, 2 washing machines, 2 dishwashers, microwave, satellite TV, CD, DVD, safe, eventual internet connection.

A truly reasonably priced house in the current context in a magnificent Tuscan location. We love The Old Schoolhouse and are certain you will, too.
