    Spello - Umbria

    print this page

Spello is our favorite hilltown in Umbria. With a population of about 6,000, Spello is full of typical narrow streets, vaulted passageways, and a couple of churches with frescoes by Pinturicchio. The point is the position and the charm. The whole place is very much on a human scale and is well-positioned for daytrips throughout the area. Assisi is just a few kilometers away. Il Molino, on Spello's main street, is a delightful restaurant. And the position in Umbria cannot be beat: everything is within minutes.

Each apartment has a telephone, though calls must be made through a central switchboard. All apartments have television connected to a satellite. Complimentary passes for swimming in the town pool are provided in summer.

    Giardino
    Accommodates 2+1— 1 Bedroom — 1 Bath

This apartment sits in an excellent position to enjoy the view. You enter one large room with kitchen at one end and living/dining area (with single sofabed) at the other. A separate bedroom has an excellent matrimonial (twinnable), and the bathroom has full tub with hand-held shower. The outdoor area is the real highlight, with well-maintained grounds and a vegetable garden used by the owner, plus comfortable outdoor furniture for the exclusive use of our clients. About the only negative here is the fairly steep climb followed by 26 steps to get into the apartment.

    Spadolino
    Accommodates 4 — 2 Bedrooms — 2 Baths

Cà Spadolino is right on Via Giulia and therefore gets more traffic noise than Il Giardino. It's not excessive, however, especially as the bedrooms face the back; perhaps real noise fanatics should consider something else or bring earplugs. The owners just fixed it up this year; it's right next to where the owners themselves live. An easy set of exterior stairs lead into the house, which is on three levels, with kitchenette and living/dining room on one level, two bedrooms and baths on another. Plus, the owners have fixed up a gorgeous roof terrace with breathtaking views over town and surrounding countryside. Despite the latest improvements in Ca' Spadolino -- air-conditioning, second bathroom, washing machine, computer with high-speed connection -- the price remains one of the lowest we know of for a place of this quality.

    Other nearby apartments
    Each accommodates 2 or 2+1

In addition to Il Giardino, another group of apartments is located down a small lane just opposite the house of the owner. The one-bedroom apartments are called Smeraldo and Zaffiro. Two apartments with a loft bedroom (Corallo and Turchese) are also available, as well as 3 studio apartments (named Rubino, Perla, and Topazio). All are spic-and-span with new furnishings and very comfortable beds. A third person can be accommodated on a single sofabed in some of the apartments. Kitchens, while simple, are satisfactory and modern. Bathrooms are new and have full tubs with hand-held shower. The owners have made arrangements for these apartments to have access to a nearby grassy area for lounging and al fresco dining.
